24x24 Tile Calculator
24×24 tiles create seamless, large-scale floors in modern open-plan kitchens, living rooms, and commercial spaces. Their minimal grout joint requirement and polished appearance make them a premium design choice — but they demand specialized installation practices.

Key 24×24 Estimation Facts
Each 24×24 tile is exactly 4.0 square feet
Divide your total room square footage by 4 to find the baseline number of tiles needed.
Requires 1/8" max flatness deviation
Large format 24x24 tiles require extremely flat subfloors. High spots cause lippage and cracking.
Tiles weigh 8 to 12 lbs each
Porcelain tiles of this scale are heavy. Ensure subfloors support the dead load safely.

Installation Guide
24×24 Tile Installation Requirements
24×24 is classified as Extra-Large Format (XLF) tile. Every aspect of installation is more demanding than standard tiles:
Substrate Requirements:
- Floor flatness: 1/8" maximum over 10 feet (stricter than 12×12 which allows 1/4")
- Use self-leveling compound to correct any high/low spots before tiling
- Concrete slabs must cure for at least 28 days before tiling
- Plywood subfloors must be at minimum 1-1/8" total thickness (2 layers minimum)
Mortar Requirements:
- Must use Medium Bed or Large/Heavy Tile (LHT) mortar — never standard thinset
- Trowel: 1/2" square notch minimum, or use a 3/4" square notch for very large tiles
- Apply mortar to BOTH the substrate AND back-butter the tile (dual application)
- LFT mortars have extended open time (up to 60 minutes) to allow leveling clips to seat properly
Lippage Control:
- Always use a tile leveling system with clips and wedges to keep tile faces flush
- Remove clips before full cure and fill the gap with grout

When to Choose 24×24 vs Smaller Formats
| Factor | 24×24 | 12×24 | 12×12 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room minimum size | 200+ ft² | 80+ ft² | Any size |
| Grout joints visible | Minimal | Few | Moderate |
| Installation difficulty | High | Medium | Standard |
| Substrate prep required | Very strict | Strict | Standard |
| Cost per tile | Higher | Medium | Standard |
| Best application | Open-plan, commercial | Modern residential | Universal |
24×24 tiles look best in rooms larger than 200 ft² — in small rooms they overwhelm the space and create excessive edge cuts at the perimeter.
24×24 FAQs
Common questions about 24×24" tile count, patterns, and installation.
How many 24×24 tiles cover 200 square feet?▼
A 24×24 tile has an area of 576 sq in = 4 ft². You need 200 ÷ 4 = 50 base tiles. Add 10% waste = 55 tiles. For diagonal lay add 15% = 58 tiles. Always round up and buy a few extra.
Can I use standard thinset for 24×24 tiles?▼
No. Standard thinset shrinks during curing, which causes lippage and hollow voids under large tiles. You must use a Large/Heavy Tile (LHT) or Large Format Tile (LFT) medium-bed mortar specifically designed for tiles over 15 inches.
How do I prevent lippage with 24×24 tiles?▼
Use a tile leveling system (clips and wedges) on every tile. Keep grout joints at minimum 3/16-inch to allow the tiles to shift slightly during setting. Ensure the substrate flatness is within 1/8-inch over 10 feet before you begin.
How heavy are 24×24 porcelain tiles?▼
A typical 24×24 porcelain tile weighs 8–12 lbs each. For a 200 ft² room (50 tiles), total weight is 400–600 lbs. Check that your subfloor can support the additional dead load — especially on upper floors with plywood decking.
What is the minimum room size for 24×24 tiles?▼
24×24 tiles work best in rooms larger than 200 ft². In smaller spaces, the perimeter cuts become very short (less than 12 inches), which looks unbalanced. A minimum of 1/2 tile width at both walls is ideal — do a dry lay to check before cutting.
