How to Use the Hexagon Tile Calculator

Follow these three simple steps to calculate your hexagon tile, grout, boxes, waste overage, and estimated budget.

1

Choose Hex type & top style

Pick pre-mounted sheets vs individual hex tiles. Select flat-top or point-top orientation layouts.

2

Measure layout boundaries

Enter exact width and length. Check surface type (floor, shower floor, walls) to compute dynamic slivers.

3

Read Grout & sheet count

Review the detailed grid layout for sheets. Hex formats require heavy grout volume bag calculations.

Individual Hex Tile vs. Hex Mosaic Sheet

Large hex tiles (6-inch, 8-inch, or 12-inch) are typically installed as individual tiles. Small hexagons (1-inch or 2-inch) are pre-mounted on 12x12 inch mesh sheets to facilitate alignment. For mosaic sheets, calculations are based on total sheet count rather than individual tile coverage.

Flat-Top vs. Point-Top Hex Layout

Hexagons can be oriented either with a flat edge facing upward (**Flat-top**) or with a corner pointing upward (**Point-top**). This choice changes how the tiles are cut along wall borders and doorways, but does not alter the net area coverage calculations.

Example Hexagon Tile Calculation

Suppose you want to tile a shower floor of **16 square feet** using 2-inch hex tiles mounted on 12x12 inch sheets:

1. Area = 16 sq ft

2. Coverage per sheet (12x12) = 1.0 sq ft

3. Base sheets count = 16 ÷ 1.0 = 16 sheets

4. Add 12% waste = 16 × 1.12 = 18 sheets total

5. If box contains 10 sheets = 2 boxes (rounded up)

Hexagon Tile FAQs

How do I calculate hexagon tile?

Measure your total floor area. If using individual tiles, divide the total area by individual hex tile coverage. If using pre-mounted sheets, divide the area by sheet coverage (typically 1.0 sq ft) and add 10-15% waste.

How do I calculate hex mosaic sheets?

Since most mosaic sheets are exactly 12x12 inches (1 sq ft), your sheet count will equal your total square footage plus a 10% to 15% waste margin.

Does hex tile need more grout?

Yes. Because hexagon shapes have more linear perimeter run than square tiles of the same size, they require about 20-30% more grout volume.

Is hex tile good for shower floors?

Yes, small hex mosaics conform easily to sloped shower floors and offer excellent slip-resistance due to numerous grout joints.
