Large hex tiles (6-inch, 8-inch, or 12-inch) are typically installed as individual tiles. Small hexagons (1-inch or 2-inch) are pre-mounted on 12x12 inch mesh sheets to facilitate alignment. For mosaic sheets, calculations are based on total sheet count rather than individual tile coverage.
Flat-Top vs. Point-Top Hex Layout
Hexagons can be oriented either with a flat edge facing upward (**Flat-top**) or with a corner pointing upward (**Point-top**). This choice changes how the tiles are cut along wall borders and doorways, but does not alter the net area coverage calculations.
Example Hexagon Tile Calculation
Suppose you want to tile a shower floor of **16 square feet** using 2-inch hex tiles mounted on 12x12 inch sheets:
1. Area = 16 sq ft
2. Coverage per sheet (12x12) = 1.0 sq ft
3. Base sheets count = 16 ÷ 1.0 = 16 sheets
4. Add 12% waste = 16 × 1.12 = 18 sheets total
5. If box contains 10 sheets = 2 boxes (rounded up)
