Reuse of Off-cuts Explained
An off-cut is the leftover section of a tile after you cut it to fit a corner or edge. Whether you can reuse this piece determines how much waste your project generates.
In straight lay installations:
When you cut a tile at the end of a row, the remaining piece can often be carried back to the start of the next row. This keeps waste at a minimal 5–7%.
In diagonal lay installations:
Perimeter cuts require a 45° angle. An off-cut from the right wall has the wrong angle to start a row on the left wall, meaning it must be thrown away. Waste climbs to 15%.
In herringbone layouts:
Each cut piece has a unique orientation. Off-cuts from herringbone are rarely reusable, resulting in the highest waste factors of 15–20%.
