Centerline Planning: Sinks, Ranges & Niches

Where you start your tile layout determines whether cuts at features look intentional or accidental. A centered layout at your kitchen focal point always looks professional. Plan this before snapping any chalk lines — it will also affect your total tile count when using the subway tile calculator.

Kitchen Sink

Center the tile layout on the sink centerline

Measure from the sink center and snap a vertical plumb line. Tiles should be mirror-image on both sides of the sink.

Range / Cooktop

Center layout on the range hood centerline

A symmetrical layout above the range reads as intentional. Off-center rows draw the eye to the asymmetry, especially with a tile mural or focal point.

Shower Niche

Center niche on a full tile width where possible

Plan niche width to align with full tile increments to avoid sliver cuts inside the niche. Mark niche position before snapping layout lines.

Electrical Outlets

Never split an outlet box between two tiles

Plan layout so outlets fall entirely within one tile. If the box falls on a grout line, shift the layout by half a tile before cutting.

Window / Door Opening

Avoid slivers at openings — aim for half tile minimum

If the layout results in a sliver less than 1 inch at an opening, shift the starting point by half a tile to create balanced cuts on both sides.

Outlet Placement Planning

Plan outlet positions before you snap your layout lines. A split outlet (straddling two tiles) requires precision cuts and creates a weak spot. Shift the layout half a tile if needed — it's invisible to the eye but prevents a frustrating cut scenario.

Grout Joint Width Effects

Grout joint width dramatically changes the look of a subway tile installation. Smaller joints create a seamless modern look; larger joints give a handmade, traditional feel. Start from the focal point of the kitchen — usually the center of the range or sink. Snap a vertical plumb line at that centerline and work symmetrically outward. This ensures cuts at windows, cabinets, and countertop edges are balanced on both sides.

Should subway tile be laid horizontally or vertically?

Horizontal running bond is the traditional and most common orientation. It makes walls feel wider and taller. Vertical subway tile (turned 90°) makes ceilings feel higher — a popular choice for showers with floor-to-ceiling tile. Both work well; the choice is aesthetic.

What is the best grout joint for subway tile?

For 3×6 inch subway tile, the most common grout joint is 1/8 inch, which produces the classic subway look. For a more modern, seamless appearance, use 1/16 inch (requires rectified tiles with precise edges). For handmade or cushion-edge tiles, use 3/16 inch to accommodate slight size variation.

Do I need to center subway tile on the wall?

You should center on a feature — not necessarily the entire wall. Center on the sink, range, or focal window. If there is no feature, find the visual center of the backsplash area and start there. Avoid starting from a corner because cuts on the opposite side will rarely be balanced.

How much extra subway tile should I order?
