How to Use the Mosaic Tile Calculator

Follow these three simple steps to calculate your mosaic tile, grout, boxes, waste overage, and estimated budget.

1

Choose Mosaic Sheet Size

Input sheet size (e.g. 12x12) and type (square, hexagon, penny, basketweave) in Step 1.

2

Measure backsplash area

Enter width/length values. Add niche or window openings to deduct their net dimensions.

Deduct window
3

Deduct sheets & round boxes

Check box quantities and leftover sheets in Step 8. Plan 10-15% waste overage for border seam cuts.

Mosaic Sheet Coverage

Most mosaic tiles are sold as square or rectangular sheets, typically **12x12 inches** (1.0 sq ft). Some specialty mosaics are smaller (e.g. 10x12 inches, which covers 0.83 sq ft). Always verify the manufacturer's sheet dimensions before finalizing your calculations.

Why Mosaics Need Careful Grout Planning

Because mosaic tiles consist of many small pieces packed together (such as 1x1 inch squares or penny rounds), they contain a high density of grout lines. This significantly increases grout volume requirements. Ensure you budget extra grout materials compared to standard large format tiles.

Example Mosaic Tile Calculation

Let's calculate for a kitchen backsplash of **25 square feet** using standard 12x12 inch mosaic sheets:

1. Area = 25 sq ft

2. Coverage per sheet (12x12) = 1.0 sq ft

3. Base sheets count = 25 ÷ 1.0 = 25 sheets

4. Add 10% waste = 25 × 1.10 = 27.5 → 28 sheets

5. If box contains 10 sheets = 3 boxes (rounded up)

Mosaic Tile FAQs

How many mosaic sheets do I need?â–¼

If your sheets are 12x12 inches (1 sq ft), the base sheet count equals your square footage. Add 10% to 15% for waste, then round up to the nearest box.

How much does one mosaic sheet cover?â–¼

A standard 12x12 inch sheet covers exactly 1.0 square foot. A 12x24 inch sheet covers 2.0 square feet.

Does mosaic tile need more grout?â–¼

Yes. Small mosaic tiles have many more joints than larger formats, meaning they consume significantly more grout per square foot.

Can I use this for shower floor mosaic?â–¼

Yes, select Shower Floor in Step 1 to calculate sloped cuts and roundings around the central floor drain.
