2. Surface Preparation Checklist

  • Test moisture with plastic sheet test
  • Grind high spots; fill low spots with SLC

  • Check deflection (L/360 max)
  • Secure all squeaky screws
  • Install cement board or uncoupling membrane

Stop if joists are damaged or subfloor is rotted.

  • Prime and seal before tiling

Never tile directly over standard drywall in showers.

4. Safety & Product Cautions

Four safety areas require attention before and during installation. Ignoring waterproofing or dust control is the most common cause of long-term failures and health issues.

Apply a liquid membrane (RedGard, Schluter Kerdi) or sheet membrane behind all tile in showers, tub surrounds, and steam rooms. Failure causes mold and structural damage.

Cutting ceramic or porcelain releases silica dust linked to silicosis. Always cut wet, wear an N95 respirator, and work outdoors or with ventilation.

SKIN HAZARD

Chemical Mortar Handling
