Compatibility
Tile requires rigid, flat, and dimensionally stable substrates. Different surfaces — concrete, plywood, cement board, and drywall — expand and flex differently. 2. Concrete Slab Surface Preparation
Tiling directly over concrete floor slabs is common but carries cracking risk. Concrete shrinks as it cures, creating tensile stress.
Identify shrinkage cracks
Any crack wider than 1/16" must be patched with cement crack filler or isolated with a dedicated membrane. Unprotected tiles laid directly over cracks will split.
Check slab curing time
New concrete slabs must cure for at least 28 days before tiling. Tiling too early results in tiles popping off due to concrete shrinkage.
Check sealer compatibility
Concrete sealers prevent thinset from bonding. Splash water on the slab — if it beads up instead of soaking in, the sealer must be ground off.
3. Plywood Subfloor Deflection Limits
Wood framing has natural flex. If a floor bounces too much under foot traffic, the grout lines will crumble and tiles will snap at the joints.
L/360 Limit (Ceramic & Porcelain)
For standard ceramic and porcelain tile, the floor joists must bend no more than the span length divided by 360.
For example, a 15-foot joist span (180 inches) can flex no more than 1/2" under maximum design loads.
L/720 Limit (Natural Stone)
Natural stone (marble, granite, slate) is rigid and has zero flex tolerance. Stone floor assemblies require joist deflection limits of L/720.
This is double the stiffness required for standard porcelain tile, and often requires joist sistering or double-layer plywood.
4. Drywall and Wall Substrate Weight Limits
Drywall is easy to hang but has strict weight carrying limits. Too much weight will peel the paper face off the plaster core.
Weight Limits on Drywall
Drywall can carry a maximum of 15 lbs per square foot of tile and setting material. Most standard tiles are 3–5 lbs, but heavy stone or mosaics can exceed this.
No greenboard in showers
Water-resistant greenboard gypsum drywall was once allowed in showers, but modern TCNA codes prohibit it. Showers require cement or foam backerboard.
Dry areas only
Only tile over drywall on dry backsplashes and accent walls. The plaster core dissolves if moisture enters the board.
5. Wet Zone & Exterior Substrates
Showers, pools, steam rooms, and outdoor areas undergo freeze-thaw cycles and thermal shifts that warp standard structures.
Shower Wall Substrates
Shower walls must use cement board (CBU) or foam waterproof boards. Standard drywall will swell, rot, and fall apart under humidity.
Seams and fasteners must be sealed with waterproof banding and liquid membranes (e.g. RedGard) to isolate wet zones.
Exterior Deck & Patio Substrates
Exterior tiling requires a concrete slab subfloor. Never tile over wood framing outside — moisture will rot the wood and break the bond.
Include expansion joints every 8 to 12 feet to allow tiles to expand under direct summer sun without buckling.

Can you tile directly over concrete?▼
Yes, you can tile directly over concrete, but concrete is prone to developing hairline shrinkage cracks that will transfer directly through to crack the tile. It is highly recommended to install an uncoupling membrane between the concrete and the tile to isolate movement.
Can tile be installed directly over drywall?▼
Tile can only be installed over drywall on dry accent walls and kitchen backsplashes, and only with tiles under 12 inches. Never tile over drywall in wet areas like shower walls, tub surrounds, or laundry floors — gypsum dissolves in water, causing complete tile failure.
Can you lay tile directly over plywood subfloors?▼
No. Standard thinset will not bond securely to plywood, and wood expands and flexes with moisture and traffic. You must install a cement backerboard overlay, an uncoupling membrane, or a double-layer plywood system before tiling wood floors.
What is deflection and what are the limits for tile?▼
Deflection is the amount of flex or bounce in a wood floor joist under load. For standard ceramic or porcelain tile, the joists must flex no more than L/360 (length of span divided by 360). For heavy natural stone tile, the limit is L/720 (no more than half the flex allowed for ceramic).
