How Does the Tile Calculator Work?

The tile calculator first finds your total project area. Then it calculates how much area one tile covers. After that, it divides the project area by the tile coverage, adds waste percentage, and rounds the final quantity up to full boxes.

This gives you a practical tile estimate before buying materials for a floor, wall, backsplash, bathroom, shower, or other tile project.

After estimating tiles, also plan your installation materials: use the grout calculator for grout quantity, the thinset calculator for mortar bags, and the installation cost calculator for a full project budget.

Formula:

  • Project area = length × width
  • Tile coverage = tile length × tile width
  • Base tiles = project area ÷ tile coverage
  • Total tiles to buy = base tiles + waste percentage
  • Boxes needed = total tiles ÷ tiles per box

What Can You Calculate?

With tilecalculators.com, you can estimate tiles, boxes, square footage, waste, grout, thinset, adhesive, trim, spacers, labor, and project cost.

Example Tile Calculation

If your floor is 10 feet long and 12 feet wide, the total area is 120 square feet. If each tile covers 1 square foot, you need 120 base tiles. With 10% waste, you should buy about 132 tiles.

If each box contains 12 tiles, you need 11 boxes.

This example is simple, but real tile projects may need more waste for diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, uneven walls, obstacles, cuts, and first-time DIY installation.

Common Tile Calculation Mistakes

Not Adding Waste

Tile projects need extra pieces for cuts, breakage, pattern matching, damaged tiles, and future repairs.

Forgetting to Round Up Boxes

Tiles are usually sold by full box, so always round up to the next full box.

Measuring Only Once

Measure the project area twice before ordering tile. Small measuring mistakes can change the number of tiles and boxes needed.

Ignoring Pattern Waste

Diagonal, herringbone, chevron, and complex layouts usually need more extra tile than straight layouts.

Not Subtracting Openings

For walls, showers, and backsplashes, subtract large windows, doors, cabinets, and openings when needed.

Choosing the Wrong Tile Size

Tile size affects coverage, grout spacing, cuts, waste, and the final look of the room.

Tile Calculator FAQs

Quick answers to common questions about calculating tiles, boxes, waste, and costs.

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?

Measure the total project area, divide it by the coverage of one tile, add waste, then round up to full boxes.

How much extra tile should I buy?

Most straight tile layouts need about 10% extra tile. Diagonal, herringbone, chevron, or irregular layouts often need 15–20%.

Does tile size affect how many tiles I need?

Yes. Larger tiles cover more area, so you need fewer pieces. Smaller tiles need more pieces for the same area.

Should I calculate tile by pieces or boxes?

Calculate both. Tile count shows how many pieces you need, but box count tells you how much to buy.

Can I use this tile calculator for floors and walls?

Yes. You can use the main tile calculator for quick floor and wall estimates, then use the floor or wall calculator for more detailed planning.

Does grout spacing affect tile quantity?

Yes. Grout spacing slightly changes tile coverage. A larger grout gap can reduce the number of tiles needed slightly, but the effect depends on tile size and layout.

Can this calculator estimate tile cost?

Yes. Add price per tile or price per box to estimate material cost. For a full budget, use the tile cost calculator.

Why do I need a tile waste percentage?

Waste covers cuts, breakage, pattern matching, damaged tiles, and future repairs. Without waste, you may run short during installation.
