3. Nominal vs. Actual Dimensions
Why is a 12" × 12" tile actually 11-7/8" × 11-7/8"? Manufacturers shave off a small fraction (usually 1/8" to 1/4") so that a grid of tiles including grout lines totals clean nominal dimensions.
Nominal Tiling Dimensions
- Nominal size is the label printed on the box (e.g. 12x24, 3x6)
- Allows builders to easily estimate count (100 nominal 12x12 = 100 sq ft)
- Simplifies wall spacing math during design planning stages
- Matches common construction modular increments (4", 12", 24")
Actual Physical Size
- Actual size is the exact tape measurement of the individual tile
- Accounts for standard grout joint widths (usually 1/8" or 3/16")
- Includes manufacturing cut tolerances (caliber matching sizes)
- Must be verified on-site before cutting layout chalk lines

What is nominal vs. actual tile size?▼
Nominal size is the rounded number used to buy tile (e.g. 12x12). Actual size is the physical measurement of the tile itself (typically 11-7/8" × 11-7/8"). The difference (usually 1/8" to 1/4") is designed to accommodate the width of the grout joint so that repeating patterns grid cleanly.
Does tile size affect grout and thinset requirements?▼
Yes. Smaller tiles have more joints per square foot, which requires substantially more grout. Conversely, large format tiles (any side over 15 inches) require thicker beds of Large Format Tile (LFT) thinset mortar to support their weight and prevent lippage.
What size tile is best for small bathrooms?▼
While traditional logic suggests using small tiles (like 8x8 or mosaic) in small rooms, modern designs often use large format 12x24 tiles. Fewer grout lines create a clean, uncluttered visual that makes a small bathroom feel larger.
Why do larger tiles require more waste allowance?▼
Larger tiles require a higher waste margin (15% vs. 10%) because each cut along a wall or border leaves a larger scrap piece. You cannot easily reuse a cut segment from a 24-inch tile elsewhere, leading to higher discard ratios.
