The most important factor in choosing joint width is the tile's edge quality. Rectified tiles (machine-cut after firing) allow narrow joints because all tiles are near-identical in size. Pressed or handmade tiles have natural size variation and need wider joints to absorb the difference.

12×24 Tile Grout Widths
Large-format tile like 12×24 highlights joint lines more than smaller tile. Keeping joints narrow is the standard approach. A consistent 33% offset pattern reduces the appearance of any caliber variation.

Flatness and Lippage
Narrow joints (1/16\"–1/8\") require extremely flat substrates and proper back-buttering. Any variation in the substrate or tile back will appear as lippage — an edge of one tile riding higher than the next. Use leveling clips during installation when joints are under 3/16\".

What grout width should I use for subway tile?▼
Classic 3×6 subway tile is typically set with a 1/16" to 1/8" grout joint for a modern look, or 3/16" for a traditional stacked or running-bond look. For a bolder grid effect, some designers use 1/4" dark grout.
What grout width is best for 12×24 tile?▼
Most 12×24 rectified porcelain tile is installed with a 1/16" to 1/8" joint. This minimizes the grid line and highlights the tile face. Non-rectified 12×24 tile typically requires at least 3/16" to absorb caliber variation.
Is 1/16" grout too narrow?▼
A 1/16" joint is only suitable for rectified tile with perfectly uniform actual dimensions. Standard pressed or handmade tile will not sit level at 1/16". The narrow joint also leaves almost no room for grout, making voids common if application technique is poor.
Does a wider grout joint affect tile quantity?▼
Yes — wider joints reduce the number of tiles needed per square foot because more of the surface area is covered by grout. The effect is small (usually 1–3% variance) but a tile calculator accounts for this automatically when you enter your joint width.
What is the difference between sanded and unsanded grout for joint width?▼
Unsanded grout is used for joints under 1/8" (3mm) wide. Sand particles are too large for narrow joints and prevent proper packing. Sanded grout is required for joints 1/8" and wider — the sand adds body and reduces shrinkage in wider gaps.
