Chevron vs. Herringbone Tile
While both patterns create a zig-zag look, they use different tile shapes. Herringbone uses standard rectangular tiles laid at 90-degree joints. **Chevron** requires tiles pre-cut at a 45-degree angle (mitered ends) that meet perfectly along a straight centerline to form clean, continuous arrows.
Why Chevron Needs More Waste
Because of the mitered angles, every cut made along walls and edges results in irregular triangular scraps. These scraps are rarely reusable elsewhere in the pattern. This causes the typical waste factor for chevron tile to hover between **15% and 20%**.
Example Chevron Calculation
Suppose you are installing chevron tile on a fireplace wall of **40 square feet** using 4x12 inch chevron mitered planks:
1. Area = 40 sq ft
2. Coverage per tile (4x12) = 0.333 sq ft
3. Base tiles count = 40 ÷ 0.333 = 120 tiles
4. Add 18% Chevron waste = 120 × 1.18 = 142 tiles total
5. If box contains 12 tiles = 12 boxes (rounded up)
