What Is Tile Waste?
Tile waste is the extra tile added to your order for cuts, broken pieces, layout changes, pattern matching, mistakes, and future repairs. A tile project rarely uses only full tiles — edges, corners, doorways, drains, outlets, niches, stairs, and patterns all create cut pieces.
Buying extra tile prevents delays if pieces break or if the same tile is difficult to find later. Tile production batches change, colors shift, and discontinued styles become impossible to match months after installation.

How to Calculate Tile Waste
To calculate tile waste, multiply your base tile quantity by the waste percentage and add the result to your base count. Tiles are sold in boxes, so round up to the nearest full box.
Tile Waste Formula:
Example: Straight Floor Layout
A rectangular floor room is 12 × 10 ft (120 sq ft). Tile is 12×12 in (1 sq ft each). Each box has 10 tiles at $45/box.
- Base tiles: 120 tiles
- Straight layout waste: 10% → 12 extra tiles
- Breakage (normal): 2% → 2 extra tiles
- Spare tiles (few): 5 tiles
- Total: 120 + 12 + 2 + 5 = 139 tiles
- Boxes: 139 ÷ 10 = 13.9 → Buy 14 boxes
- Total cost: 14 × $45 = $630.00
- Leftover tiles: (14 × 10) − 139 = 1 tile

Breakage Allowance, Spare Tiles & Common Mistakes
Breakage allowance is extra tile added for pieces that may break during shipping, handling, cutting, or installation. It is separate from layout waste and should be added on top of the cut waste percentage.
Spare tiles are intentionally held back for future repairs. Tile colors, dye lots, and production batches change over time — keeping 5–10 spare tiles can prevent an expensive mismatch later.
6 Most Common Tile Waste Mistakes
1. Using 10% for every project
Ten percent is not always enough. Complex patterns, showers, stairs, pools, and irregular rooms may need 15–20% or more.
2. Forgetting breakage allowance
Tile can break during cutting, handling, or installation. Glass, stone, and large-format tile may need 3–5% extra.
3. Ignoring cut waste at edges
