How to Calculate Pool Waterline Tile
Waterline tile is the tile band around the inside edge of the pool near the water level. To calculate waterline tile, multiply the pool perimeter by the waterline band height.
Example: A rectangular pool is 30 feet long and 15 feet wide:
- Perimeter: 30 + 30 + 15 + 15 = 90 feet
- Band Height: 6 inches = 0.5 feet
- Waterline tile area: 90 × 0.5 = 45 square feet
So, the pool needs about 45 square feet of waterline tile before waste.
How to Calculate Pool Floor Tile
Pool floor tile is based on the inside floor area of the pool. The formula depends on pool shape:
- Rectangular: Pool floor area = length × width
- Round: Pool floor area = π × radius²
- Oval: Pool floor area = π × half length × half width
- L-shaped: Pool floor area = rectangle 1 area + rectangle 2 area
For kidney or freeform pools, use known floor area if available. If not, use maximum length, average width, and a shape complexity adjustment estimate.
Waterline vs Full Pool Tile
Waterline tile and full pool interior tile are not the same estimate:

How to Calculate Pool Wall Tile
Pool wall tile is estimated by multiplying pool perimeter by average depth.
If the pool has a shallow end and a deep end, use average depth:
Example: A pool has a shallow depth of 3 feet and a deep depth of 7 feet.
- Average depth: (3 + 7) ÷ 2 = 5 feet
- Perimeter: 90 feet
- Pool wall tile area: 90 × 5 = 450 square feet
The pool wall tile area is about 450 square feet before waste.

Pool Shape Calculation Tips
For a round pool, enter the diameter. The calculator uses the diameter to estimate pool floor area and perimeter. Round pools usually need extra waste because curved edges create more cuts.
For an oval pool, enter the full length and full width. The calculator uses these values to estimate the oval floor area and perimeter. Oval pools may need more waste than rectangular pools because of curved sides.
For a rectangular pool, enter the length and width. This is usually the easiest shape to calculate. Rectangular pools usually have the most predictable tile estimate.
For an L-shaped pool, measure it as two rectangles. Add the area of both sections together. For waterline tile, use the outside perimeter of the L shape.
For a rounded-end pool, estimate the straight rectangular section and the rounded end separately. This shape may need more waste than a standard rectangle because of the curved end.
Kidney and freeform pools are harder to calculate because the curves are not uniform. For best results, enter the measured pool perimeter and known pool area if available.

Example Pool Tile Calculation
A rectangular pool is 30 feet long and 15 feet wide. The user wants waterline tile only.
- Pool perimeter: 30 + 30 + 15 + 15 = 90 feet
- Waterline tile height: 6 inches = 0.5 feet
