The 33% offset and 50% offset are the two most common tile stagger patterns for rectangular tiles. For small tiles (under 6 inches), both are fine. For large format tiles — especially 12×24 and plank tiles — the 50% offset causes lippage: a visible step between tile edges caused by the natural bow in large tiles. Why Does 50% Cause Lippage?

Every large format tile has a slight natural bow or warp — this is unavoidable in the manufacturing process and is within tolerance per ANSI standards. The bow peaks at the midpoint (50%) of the tile length.

When you lay the next row at a 50% offset, the grout joint of the new row falls directly over the midpoint of the tile below — exactly where the bow is highest. This creates a visible height difference (lippage) between the tile edge below and the tile surface above.

At a 33% offset, the grout joint falls at the 1/3 point — where the bow is still near the tile end and has not yet peaked. This keeps tile edges flush and eliminates the lippage condition.

Why is 33% offset recommended for large tile?

Is 50% offset bad for all tile?

No — 50% offset is perfectly fine for small tiles (3×6, 4×8 subway tiles). Small tiles have negligible bow. The 33% rule applies specifically to tiles with any side exceeding 15 inches. This threshold is defined in ANSI A108.02 and the TCNA Handbook, which both require ≤33% offset for large format tiles.

What does lippage look like and how bad is it?

Lippage is a raised tile edge that catches light, is visible from grazing angles, and creates a tripping hazard on floors. Even 1.5mm of lippage is noticeable. It is permanent — once tiles are set, lippage cannot be corrected without removing and resetting affected tiles. On a large area, it can affect dozens of tiles.

Can I use a random offset instead of 33%?

Yes. A random offset (sometimes called a 'tumbled' or 'ashlar' pattern) staggers tiles at varying offsets — never consistently at 50%. It is commonly used with wood-look plank tiles and natural stone. The key rule remains: no single row should be offset by exactly 50% from an adjacent row.

Does the 33% rule apply to vertical tile installations?

Yes. Vertical tile installations (tiles turned portrait on a wall) are subject to the same warp physics. If using large-format tiles vertically with an offset, use 33% maximum. In practice, most vertical large-format installations use a grid (stacked) pattern with no offset to avoid the issue entirely.
