A **50% offset** (half-tile stagger) is the traditional brick bond pattern. Modern large-format subway tiles (longer than 15 inches) are often recommended for a **33% offset** (one-third tile stagger) to prevent visual bowing or lippage issues on uneven walls.
Example Large Format Calculation
Let's calculate for a room floor of **120 square feet** using standard 12x24 inch tiles with a 12% waste budget:
1. Area = 120 sq ft
2. Coverage per tile (12x24) = 2.0 sq ft
3. Base tiles count = 120 ÷ 2.0 = 60 tiles
4. Add 12% waste = 60 × 1.12 = 67.2 → 68 tiles total
5. If box contains 8 tiles = 9 boxes (rounded up)
