A herringbone tile pattern is a layout where rectangular tiles are arranged at alternating 90° angles to create a V-shaped, interlocking zigzag effect. Its main variants are 45° herringbone (tiles diagonal to walls), 90° herringbone (tiles parallel to walls), and center-spine herringbone (tiles radiating from a central axis). Tile Ratios & Compatible Sizes

How to Start a Herringbone Layout

Find Room Center

Measure length and width, mark the exact center point of the room or wall surface.

Snap a Center Spine

For center-spine style: snap a chalk line lengthwise through the center. This is your anchor.

Dry-Lay First Row

Place tiles either side of the spine to verify balance and border width before any thinset.

Check Border Tiles

Border cut tiles should be at least 3 inches wide. If narrower, shift your start point slightly.

Set in Sections

Work in 2×3 ft sections away from the center spine. Do not skip to opposite walls.

Cut Edges Last

Cut all perimeter tiles only after the field tiles are set and cured (minimum 24 hours).

Always dry-lay at least 3 rows from center before mixing any thinset. Adjustments after setting are expensive.

Does Herringbone Need a Border?

A border is optional but highly recommended for herringbone floor installations. Without a border, the angled cut tiles at the perimeter can look incomplete or unfinished — especially at 45° herringbone where cuts are diagonal to the wall.

Clean perimeter definition. The V pattern reads as intentional and complete. Border tiles are straight-cut rectangles, so no extra angles needed.

Perimeter cut tiles expose raw diagonal edges at various widths. Visually can look accidental unless the room walls are perfectly square.

Border tile width

Plan for a border that is at least 3–4 inches wide. Thinner borders look unintentional. The border tile size does not need to match the herringbone tile size.

Does herringbone tile need a border?
