Tile movement joints and expansion gaps absorb the thermal expansion of tiles and the contraction of concrete substrates. Skipping these joints is the primary cause of tented (popped) tiles, grout cracking, and edge delamination. Standard TCNA EJ171 guidelines require perimeter gaps at all wall junctions and field expansion joints every 8–25 feet depending on heat exposure. Movement Joints vs Grout Joints

Many homeowners fill perimeter gaps or shower corner lines with cementitious grout — which is a critical installation error. Grout is rigid and will crack under minimal substrate movement.

Popping / Tenting Failure

When concrete slabs dry, they shrink. When tiles get hot or wet, they expand.

Without expansion gaps:

The expanding tiles press against the walls. With nowhere to go, they buckle upward, cracking the thinset and popping off the floor in a visual ridge (tenting).

Inside corners warning:

Shower walls shift independently. If you fill vertical inside corners with grout, the joints will crack within months. Always use 100% silicone sealant at wall junctions.

EJ171 Backer Rod tip:

For deep expansion joints over concrete expansion joints, pack the joint with a foam backer rod before applying silicone. The silicone should only stick to the tile sides, not the substrate bottom.

Answers to common movement joint and tile expansion questions.

Do tile floors need expansion gaps?

Yes. All tile installations expand and contract due to thermal changes and moisture absorption. Slabs also shrink over time. Without expansion gaps (such as 1/4" gaps at all walls), the expanding tiles will press against rigid walls and lift off the floor, popping or 'tenting' in a structural failure.

Can movement joints be filled with standard grout?

No. Standard cementitious or epoxy grout is rigid and inflexible. If a movement joint or corner is filled with grout, it will crack and pop out within months due to natural deflection. Always fill expansion gaps and corners with 100% silicone or polyurethane sealant.

How wide should tile perimeter gaps be?

For interior installations, leave a minimum 1/4 inch gap between the tile edges and any walls, columns, cabinets, or doorway thresholds. This gap is easily hidden by baseboards or quarter-round molding.

How often should field expansion joints be placed?

According to TCNA EJ171, place field expansion joints every 20 to 25 feet in both directions on large open floors. For floors exposed to direct sunlight, radiant heating, or outdoor moisture, place joints every 8 to 12 feet.
