4. Why Waterproofing Is Non-Negotiable

Cement Board Is NOT Waterproof
Cement backerboard keeps tiles bonded and is water-resistant, but water passes right through it. Without a membrane layer, water reaches wood studs and causes rot and mold.
Liquid Membrane (RedGard / HydroBan)
Roll-on or brush-on membranes cure into a flexible waterproof rubber coating. Two coats required. Mesh tape on seams. Cost: $400–$800 installed.
Sheet Membrane (Schluter KERDI)
Fleece-backed sheet membrane bonded directly into the thinset. Superior seam protection, slightly faster installation. Cost: $500–$1,200 installed.

Can I tile over existing shower tile?▼
In some cases, yes — but it adds weight, height, and requires that the existing tile is fully bonded (no hollow spots) and waterproof. For any new shower waterproofing, the correct approach is to remove to substrate and apply a fresh waterproofing layer before re-tiling.
