Substrate Flatness & Tile Backs
Before laying thinset, the floor or wall substrate must be verified for flatness. Any variation will lead to lippage and pockets of air beneath the tile.
Shower & Wet Area Coverage
Showers, tubs, steam rooms, and exterior installations have strict requirements. In dry areas, 80% coverage is acceptable, but wet areas demand 95%+ coverage with zero voids where water can pool.
Back-buttering mandatory
Apply a skim coat of mortar to the back of each tile to ensure complete adhesion.
No spot bonding
Never use the 'dot method' (putting dollops of thinset on the corners of the tile). This leaves the center hollow and prone to cracking under weight.
Compress ridges fully
Press the tile firmly into the bed and slide it slightly perpendicular to the trowel ridges to collapse them fully.
Large-Format Mortar (LFT)
Tiles larger than 15 inches on any side require a specialized Large-Format Tile (LFT) mortar. Standard thinset will shrink as it cures, pulling the heavy tile down and causing lippage. LFT mortar holds its volume during curing to prevent shrinkage.

What trowel size should I use for 12×24 tiles?▼
For 12×24 tiles, use a 1/2" x 1/2" square notch trowel or a 3/4" x 9/16" flow notch (Euro-notch) trowel. Large-format tiles require a deep thinset bed to absorb any warping in the tile and substrate, and must be back-buttered.
How much thinset coverage does a 50 lb bag provide?▼
A 50 lb bag of thinset covers approximately 80 to 90 sq ft when using a 1/4" x 1/4" trowel, but this drops to 40 to 50 sq ft with a 1/2" x 1/2" trowel, and down to 30 to 35 sq ft with a large-format trowel. Read label details to determine exact coverage ranges.
Why is substrate flatness critical for large tiles?▼
Large tiles cannot bend. If the substrate is uneven, the tile will rock, leave hollow voids under the surface, or develop high lips (lippage) between tiles. Substrates must be flat within 1/8" over 10 feet for large-format tiles.
What is back-buttering and when is it needed?▼
Back-buttering is the practice of applying a thin, flat layer of thinset to the back of the tile before placing it. This is mandatory for all large-format tiles, wet areas, and heavy traffic floors to ensure 95%+ mortar transfer and zero voids.
