Can you use regular tile around a fireplace?▼
Yes, you can use standard ceramic, porcelain, glass, or natural stone tiles around a fireplace surround (the wall area), as temperatures rarely exceed 150°F to 200°F. However, for the hearth (floor) or inside the firebox, you must use heat-rated tiles, firebricks, and high-temp mortars.
Do you need special thinset/mortar for fireplace tile?▼
For fireplace surrounds and hearths, you must use a high-quality polymer-modified thinset rated for thermal expansion, or specialty high-temp refractory mortar if tiling near the firebox opening. Ordinary cheap thinset can dry out, lose adhesion, and crumble over time.
Is porcelain or ceramic better for a fireplace surround?▼
Porcelain is superior. It is fired at much higher temperatures than ceramic, making it extremely dense, nearly impervious to water, and far more resistant to thermal shock, crack expansion, and soot staining.
How do you clean soot off fireplace tile and grout?▼
Use a pH-neutral cleaner or a mild alkaline cleaning solution mixed with warm water and a scrub brush. Avoid acidic cleaners on natural stone or colored grout, as they can cause etching and discoloration. Seal your grout joints during installation to prevent soot from penetrating.
