Glass Mosaics

The premier luxury option. Transparent tiles refract sun rays, creating beautiful aquatic effects. Completely non-porous and chemical resistant, though material and installation labor are expensive.

Porcelain Mosaics

The highly durable, cost-effective standard. Low-absorption clay fired at extreme temperatures. Extremely resistant to cracking and chipping, making it excellent for pool walls and floors.

Stone Waterline

Rustic materials like slate or travertine look beautiful but require high maintenance. They absorb minerals, require regular sealing, and are susceptible to waterline scaling.

Pool Coping Tiles

Specifically shaped profiles featuring a rounded bullnose or drop-face edge. Designed to cap the pool rim, providing swimmers a safe grip and diverting pool splash-back.

4. Sheet Backing Systems

Pool mosaics are sold on sheets. The type of mounting backing you choose determines whether your pool tile stays bonded or pops off within five years.

Mesh-Backed Sheets (NOT Recommended)

  • Soluble glues holding the mesh dissolve under constant water exposure
  • The mesh fabric blocks mortar from reaching 100% direct tile backing
  • Creates micro air pocket voids behind the tile where water aggregates
  • Trapped water undergoes freeze-thaw expansion, causing early delamination
  • Not approved under TCNA standards for pool immersion or wet zones

Dot-Mounted & Paper-Faced (Recommended)

  • Paper-faced sheets place the protective paper on the front, leaving the back 100% free
  • Dot-mounted tiles join with small structural polyurethane dots on joint sides
  • Ensures 100% direct thinset contact with the back of the tile body
  • Fully approved under TCNA guidelines for submerged pools and waterlines
  • Guarantees permanent chemical mortar bond strength inside swimming pools

5. Pool Tiling Best Practices

Tiling a pool requires distinct engineering guidelines. Follow these rules to protect your waterline and basin bonds.

Essential Installation Rules

  • Epoxy Grout Selection: Submerged joints require non-porous chemical bonds. Epoxy grouts resist chemical erosion and calcium scaling. Estimate joint requirements using our grout calculator before buying materials.
  • Strict 21-Day Curing: Never fill a newly tiled pool right away. The thinset mortar and grout must cure dry for 21 to 28 days to reach their full compression strength. Early immersion ruins adhesive bonds.

What is the difference between regular tile and pool tile?

Pool tiles are formulated to be frost-proof and completely impervious to water absorption (ANSI class < 0.5%). They use specialized glazes that do not crack under constant thermal expansion or degrade when exposed to chlorine, acid, and sanitizing chemicals.

Is glass or porcelain better for swimming pools?

Both are excellent, but glass offers unmatched aesthetics and is 100% impervious to chemical scale. Porcelain is much easier to install, less expensive, and highly durable, making it the practical choice for budget-conscious basin tiling.

Why do waterline tiles fall off?

Waterline tiles fall off due to three main causes: using mesh-backed sheets where the glue disintegrates under water, poor mortar coverage (leaving hollow air pockets where water freezes and expands), or inadequate surface prep and movement joints.

How long must pool tile cure before filling the pool?

Pool tiles must cure dry for a minimum of 21 days (or 28 days for maximum bond strength) after installation is complete before you fill the pool with water. Filling the pool too early re-emulsifies the thinset, weakening the chemical bond.
