What constitutes a large format tile?

Any tile that has at least one edge longer than 15 inches is classified as a large format tile. This includes standard 12x24, 24x24, wood planks (8x36, 6x24), and larger porcelain panels.

Do large format tiles need back-buttering?

Yes. Back-buttering is mandatory for large format tiles. It fills microscopic voids on the back of the tile and ensures the mortar locks the heavy tile to the substrate without hollow voids.

Can I use standard thinset for 12x24 tiles?

No. Standard thinset shrinks during curing, which pulls the tiles down unevenly and creates lippage. You must use a Medium Bed Mortar (labeled LFT or LHT) which supports the weight without shrinkage.

How flat must the floor be for large tile?

The floor flatness must not exceed 1/8 inch of deflection or height variance over a 10-foot span. Standard tile allows 1/4 inch, but large format tile is rigid and will crack or experience lippage if set on uneven concrete.
